Life in the UK Test Day: What to Bring and What Happens
Before you leave home
- Bring the original ID you booked with — copies are not accepted, and its photo must look like you.
- Arrive in good time: allow up to about 2 hours at the centre in total, including checks and your result.
- You cannot bring children or family members into the centre with you.
At the centre
- Your ID is checked and your photograph is taken. If you refuse the photograph, you cannot take the test and you will not be refunded.
- Personal items — including phones, handbook copies and wrist watches — go in the lockers provided. Nothing goes into the test room with you except what the centre allows.
- You may make notes during the test, but you must hand them to the supervisor before you leave.
- Need help — for example extra equipment or access arrangements? Ask when you book, not on the day.
The test itself
- A few practice questions come first; they do not count towards your score.
- You can adjust the font size and screen background colour, flag questions and return to them within the time.
- Stay silent in the test room; disruptive candidates can be removed without a refund.
Your result
You get your result the same day, at the centre. If you pass, keep the pass notification letter safe — you will need its reference for your settlement or citizenship application, and a pass never expires. If you fail, you are told which subject areas to study, but not which questions you got wrong.
