B1 English Test vs Life in the UK Test: What Is the Difference?
They sound similar but they are two separate requirements, and passing one does not cover the other. Together they form the Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK (KoLL) requirement for settlement and citizenship.
Life in the UK test
- Tests knowledge: British values, history, society, government and law, from the official handbook.
- 24 multiple-choice questions, 45 minutes, 75% pass mark, £50.
- Taken on a computer at an official test centre; result the same day; pass never expires.
B1 English test
- Tests language: speaking and listening at CEFR level B1 (for most settlement/citizenship routes).
- Taken with an approved provider (a "SELT"); you get a certificate/reference for your application.
- Some people are exempt — for example nationals of majority English-speaking countries, or holders of a degree taught in English.
